Mountain biking in Cape Town ‘s ‘Winter’

We woke up with a severe hangover (not lucky), after a great birthday party hosted by a wonderful friend who supplied all the amazing food platters and huge amounts of delicious wine (very lucky).

Beyerkloof Pinotage was my wine of choice for the evening but copious amounts of it under the Africa skies resulted in Louise and I waking up feeling like all the liquid had been squeezed out of us- so much for self control!

After a quick cup of tea and some hastily scoffed rescue croissants, five of us bundled into Eric the stormtrooper and met up with 6 other friends (who didn’t appear to be nearly as hung over as us) at the Contermanskloof trailhead. It’s great to see that they’re building a little seating area and tuck shop there to help prolong the post ride banter- keep it up guys!

We set off at a pace that was rather too brisk for my churning stomach (thanks Whop). The photo above was the last we saw of the fast bunch, as we climbed up through the vineyards on the way to the top.

I did manage to snap a picture here, which shows Graham about to do the entire (very hilly) ride on his on-one singlespeed. Nice one!

We slowly weaved our way upwards through the beautifully constructed single track and eventually, were faced with the final climb to the mast. This climb is an uber steep gravel track that steepens about 4/5’s of the way up, just as your heart rate hits max. It is a lung buster of note, but also tests your technical climbing ability due to it’s steepness and lack of traction. Kath has to be commended on riding the entire way up on her first time here- what a machine! This is her just before collapsing at the top!

And this is some of us at the top, catching our breath-note the terrible Cape Town Weather in June. Abysmal!

Then came the fun part- I am in fact, still smiling just thinking about the incredible ride down .

This was just a small part of a nice flowing section that you really had to push hard to enjoy to the maximum. I don’t think I’ve ever had my bike so low in the corners, as I did on this ride. Grin!

Towards the end of the ride, there’s a nice little section that Deon managed to capture on Video. Check it out and just remember how lucky you are to be enjoying this world!

So thats how we spent our Sunday Morning. What did you do with yours? If you’d like to join us for an inspirational ride, then contact us and we’ll make sure you ride the best Cape Town has to offer!
