New cycle lanes in Cape Town

Cape Town weather was at it’s finest last Sunday so after a quick batch of scones and tea, Louise and I set off on our road bikes in search of the new west coast bicycle lanes in Cape Town. This is what we found…

We cycled from Claremont through to Salt River- usually an unpleasant experience, except for the lovely new curvaceous cycle lane from the Liesbeek Parkway/Alma Road junction to the River club turning at Observatory (about 2km of cycle paths).

We cruised through the normally chaotic Albert Road through Salt River and as we crossed over the Lower Church Street Bridge, we caught a glimpse the new BRT bus lanes and cycle lanes. While they are not completed yet, we rode down onto them and enjoyed the bus-free (and more importantly car-free!) lanes for a kilometre or so before having to get off and walk our bikes over an uncompleted section of road (See below for pictures). This took us to the Paarden Eiland area and we ambled along the brand new bike lanes. I must admit that sometimes the empty bus lane was just too tempting to stay off of!

Our quiet amble came to end as we popped out at the Milnerton market where it was a bit busier than normal due to the perfect weather. We were pleased to see that the cycle lane continued from here all the way up (and beyond) the Dolphin Beach turn off. We took the turn off, admired the perfect view of Table Mountain and turned back towards home which came to a cycle trip of about 47km-The map below is significant in the sense that it portrays uninterrupted, safe cycling for a good 20 kilometers! Good going City of Cape town! (and all involved).

In conclusion, we are super proud of these new bike lanes and can already see how many more people are out on their bikes using them. We did pick up 2 punctures due to thorns but as the lanes are used more, the glass, thorns and sand should be less of a concern. For my part, I think that in a decade or so, these bike lanes in conjunction with E-bikes are going to save the people of Cape Town a huge amount of money and time.
